Kitsap Regional Library has initiated a new holds policy. Library materials will only be held for pickup for a week. After that, items will go back into circulation.

The library shortened the hold time from 10 to seven days to increase the availability of materials. In the past, the library would purchase multiple copies of popular materials, considerably shortening the wait time. Now, as part of KRL’s effort to balance revenue and expenditure, the materials budget – the purchase of new books, DVDs, CDs and other items – has been reduced by $250,000. This translates to fewer copies of popular materials and longer wait times on holds.

“KRL is working very hard to stay within our budget yet provide the services that make a library the heart of the community,” said KRL Director Jill Jean. “We aren’t purchasing as many copies of a popular item, but spending our precious collection dollars on a wider variety of materials. The wait time is shortened so more people can have access to the desired material without penalizing our active-hold users. We think that this is a reasonable way to provide access to all.”
