August means time for the rummage sale

In Hansville, if it’s August, it’s time for the annual rummage sale at the Greater Hansville Community Center in Buck Lake Park (you can’t miss the signs as you come down the hill into town).

The parking lot starts to fill up early and the crowd gathers behind the rope just waiting for the signal to start looking for all those bargains. As the rope falls, the cashiers stand ready and we’re off to another hectic, wonderful experience for all (even the tired pre-sale workers are excited).

Some of the most interesting things can be found and this year there is some added fun. There is a special birdbath and some large furniture pieces being auctioned.

Children outgrow their clothes so fast (especially those dressy kind) that there are many of these outfits in this year’s children’s section – all frilly or lacy or just-for-fun clothes for girls and some dress-up jackets for boys (and jeans with knees still intact). They’re clean and good to go to the next family wedding or church meeting or play date.

The Boutique Corner has a fur coat and several lovely dresses and other very nice pieces. And of course, there is the jewelry counter to cruise. Take a look at the old psychiatrist leather couch from the early 1900s and the metal (yes metal) suitcases, and in Collectibles, look at the seashell flower display.

Of course, there are those TVs that would work perfectly fine for the kids’ games and don’t forget to look in the holiday section to find wonderful Halloween and Christmas decorations and even things for Easter and the Fourth of July.

And tools. If you’re looking for just the right screwdriver or wrench, it might be here. There are lots of hand tools and some motor driven (already tested and oiled and ready to go) and lawn equipment and small appliances (also tested).

But one of the most special things to see and buy is a raffle ticket for two new quilts. A representative from the quilting industry donated a package of quilt pieces, so a special lady, Lynn Hix, took the pieces, cut and arranged them, and made two quilts that will be available for viewing. You can buy a raffle ticket and then wish really hard you win.

It’s long been known the Greater Hansville Area is special. Special people, special scenery and special events, and the annual rummage sale is one of the most special. Don’t miss it. See you Aug. 9 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Aug. 10 (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) for this special day in Hansville.
