Ronald E. Muell of Kingston (pictured left on his first birthday) celebrated his 70th birthday on July 27 at home (below left), with family and friends. He is in good health, and grateful for his many years and experiences. The celebration included a special tradition with a special candle. His mother, Helen Esther Muell Ferguson, bought the candle for his first birthday cake, and afterwards, saved it in an olive jar. Since then, the candle has been used on all of his siblings, cousins, their children, and grand-children’s cakes on their first birthdays. It was also used on his maternal grandfather’s, Elvis D. Marshall, 75th birthday cake in 1972, and again on Sept. 10, 1996 to grace the 75th birthday cake of his mother. Several odes have been written about this special candle, and its use documented in a photo album. The candle will eventually pass to Ron Muell’s oldest grandson Cristopher Martin Andrew Muell of Tucson, Ariz. Ron Muell is retired from the U.S. Air Force and Charles Schwab Co. He and his wife, Helen Humes, have resided in Kingston since 1995. - Courtesy photos
