Hansville council talks ferries, shorelines | GHAAC Notes | January

Editor’s note: The following are notes from the Greater Hansville Area Advisory Council’s Dec. 8 meeting, submitted by Bonnie Isaacs.

Dennis Cziske said the Ferry Advisory Committee has continued its work with Washington State Ferries to develop a draft plan for ferry reservations.

Cziske also said that on Dec. 15 ferries will present to the Transportation Committee a proposal to add a fuel surcharge to ferry fares. The surcharge will be imposed when fuel costs exceed $2.53 a gallon. Such charges will not be subject to public review or approval. They project that this will bring fare box revenue up to 84 precent of costs.

Susan Donahue, Kitsap County Watershed Project Coordinator, gave an overview of the county’s plan to update the Shoreline Management Master Program. The program will serve as a framework for use, protection and restoration of shoreline throughout the county. They are nearing the end of the first year of the three year project and are seeking participation from the community in evaluating and updating the plan. Patrick Raymond of Olympic Resource Management spoke on logging practices and plans for their properties in North Kitsap.

He said replanting of acreage on Little Boston has begun but was on hold because of the extremely cold weather. Residents spoke of the negative impact they experienced when land adjacent to theirs was harvested and Raymond agreed that in the future they would try to communicate better with the community in advance of cutting.

The by-laws committee reported on their work to date and solicited suggestions from the members. Revised drafts will be distributed to members for consideration.

The council’s next meeting will be 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Greater Hansville Community Center.
