Wood ‘n’ glass
The lathe was whirring when I called for details about Karyn and Terry Cott’s August show at the Kingston Art Gallery. Opening Aug. 7 and running through Sept. 8, their reception at our Second Saturday Gallery Night is 5-8 p.m. Aug. 9. This husband-and-wife team, known as Cott’s Wood ‘n’ Glass, collaborate on some of their work.
Karyn’s fused glass glows with her sense of color and design. The whole process including kiln time can take 24 hours. Stained glass seemed too flat and lost its intrigue, but fused glass, with its dimensionality, brought new versatility. “Slumping” is when the glass takes on shape. Karyn’s show, “Study in Ebony and Ivory Glass,” features decorative as well as functional pieces. New this summer is her fabulous, fun and bold eye-popping fused glass jewelry.
At our July Second Saturday Gallery Night, cheers went out as one of Terry’s tables, with inlays of contrasting woods and Karyn’s glass, went off to grace a local home. We had a hot time in the old town that night – cooling off on the new roof deck of Cleo’s Landing, listening to the great tunes of John Becker and friend, eating gourmet refreshments and drinks, AND seeing great art and meeting great artists. We enjoyed the unique ambiance of downtown Kingston.
Asked how long he has been a wood worker, Terry replied “forever.” He uses exotic woods like zebra, paduk, lace and curly maple in his tables, mirrors, benches and custom furniture with the inlays he loves doing. Then there are the french rolling pins, kaleidoscopes, pen and pencil sets along with his photographs in his show, “Expressions in Wood and Digital Photography.” He is also a videographer making DVDs for churches, dance groups and their own enjoyment.
Besides their five grandchildren, they enrich their lives with kayaking and their two Italian Greyhounds (which fit nicely into their RV). After months of construction, near the end of the year, art lovers will be welcome to their new studio addition to their home of 27 years on Candy Loop Lane off of Highway 305.
Terry is president of our cooperative and Karyn is vice president. Their leadership, energy and care means the gallery is flourishing.
