Kingston unruffled by Colman Dock plans

Port of Kingston Commissioners aren’t too concerned about a proposed plan by the state Department of Transportation to eliminate passenger ferries at Colman Dock in Seattle, banking on time to help them figure it out.

“We’re working with [Washington State] Ferries and the legislature to figure out a way so we won’t be left high and dry,” said Commissioner Pete DeBoer.

The state’s ferries division (WSF) has released a plan recently to replace the aging Colman Dock beginning in 2015, and would remove the lease for passenger-only ferry facilities. WSF used to operate their own passenger-only ferry service, but discontinued in 2006 as directed by the legislature. King County Ferry District and the Port of Kingston provide the foot ferry services to and from Seattle.

“The loss of Coleman Dock will be an issue for our ferry service but luckily we have time to figure another location out,” said Port Executive Director and SoundRunner Project Manager, Kori Henry. “We will be working with other ferry service providers to see if there is a partnership that can be formed to share another docking facility as well as searching for another location.”

WSF is working with ferry operators to find a new location in Seattle, and encouraging public comment until March 15.
