Kingston shuts out Chimacum in first game of the season
CHIMACUM — The Kingston Buccaneers pulled off a first for the program Sept. 2 — shutting out another team.
The non-league game, played against Chimacum High School, ended 51-0. Bucs head coach Dan Novick said Kingston controlled the line of scrimmage most of the game, a change he wanted to see after last season.
"I wanted the team to be more physical from week one," he said. "We're off to a good start, but it's just a start."
The Bucs won 20-18 the last time they faced Chimicum at the beginning of the 2010-11 season.
The Bucs were on the attack the entire night, Novick said. This included sophomore defensive back Bobby Reece, who led the hit chart and interceptions, and senior Joseph Shoemaker and sophomore Tucker Burns who recovered the ball after a missed snap.
Senior quarterback Sam Byers held his own as well.
Byers ended the night with one rushing touchdown and two passing touchdowns, both finding senior receiver George Marinan. Byers accumulated 124 passing yards with five complete passes out of a total of eight attempts.
The Bucs are now 1-0 overall for the season. The team travels to Bainbridge to face the Spartans Friday at 7 p.m. The Spartans won their first game against the North Kitsap Vikings Sept. 2, with a 13-7 overtime victory.
